Q: “What did you get for Christmas?”

A: “I got FAT”

Yep, it’s that time of the year again where warm feelings and coziness are being alternated with the anxiety of gaining weight. Well, let me tell you this: You don’t get fat between Christmas and New Year but between New Year and Christmas! Get it, Sherlock!?

So it’s time for that annual, always popular, Top Ten Myths & Facts list and hopefully you’ll get some rest during the holidays. I’m not going to explain every point but trust me, it’s solid.

1. 1 kilo of fat is equal to about 7.000 kcal.

2. If you eat 7 BigMac menu’s ABOVE your daily calorie need you gain one kilo of fat.

3. You don’t gain more fat after 8 PM, you gain more fat from eating more than you need.

4. If the scale says you gained 3 kilos on the 1st of January. Trust me, more than half of it is retained moisture and will be gone as soon as you pick up your ‘normal’ eating pattern.

5. It’s true! Sugar makes you fat! So do proteins, fruit, nuts, salads and cucumbers.

6. Ok, nuance… you have to eat 155 cucumbers to gain 1 kilo of fat 😉

7. One slice of Christmas bread: 149kcal, one glass of gluhwein: 103kcal (7.000+ remember!)

8. Still not convinced? Do a new year’s dive! You burn a bit more calories during cold weather.

9. Nutrition helps you lose weight, not sport.

10. Live life and enjoy a little, will you!
