What a shit week and yet, the best week in years! (I’ll get back to that later on)

Last weekend The Rolling Stones were in Amsterdam. After an already impressive 55 year career they still have no problem filling an Johan Cruijff Arena with 40.000 people. Resellers were still asking 6/7 times more than the original price, merchandise still sells and fans are waiting for days in front of their hotel just to catch a glimpse of the band. And you know why? Because they still have ‘the Sparkle’! It might not all be pure notes, dance steps come seconds to late (a friend described it as watching a game of Lucky Ajax, the benefit team consisting of old Ajax players) but they rocked, they still rocked and everything they did, sang, told an danced was with energy and total ‘satisfaction’. Because they still had ‘the Sparkle’.

Do you think that in those 55 years they were ever insecure, thought that they lost it, had no more inspiration? Of course!

Well, welcome to my week. #nofilter

Every year I do one or two studies to extend my knowledge in my line of work. This year I decided to do two studies simultaneously. Two times 24 hours in a classroom and 4 hours of self study per week online. Double. From day one I got energy from learning new stuff. I was on fire! In whole, it had been good year work wise. Had modest success in different disciplines and got recognition from in and outside the branch. Recognition is important to me. I feel secure, get inspiration and overall I feel good.

Why? Because a lot of times I feel insecure! More than I ever showed until I started writing these damn #nofilter columns 😉

But last week a got a bump in my self-confidence. Lost four clients by force majeure, outside my control and on top of that I got replaced by my own kickboxing teacher at a company with which I’ve been training for 1,5 years. When they told me about the replacement, I was at a trainer team meeting with 30 top bill trainers who suddenly ALL seemed to be better than me and per second I felt more and more insecure. Thought I lost it. My knowledge, my appearance, everything.

OK STOP! Time for ratio and helicopter view!
Instead of feeling more miserable and getting wasted in the pub, I started analyzing the situation.
Why did this happen?

  • The loss of clients was outside my control and even if it wasn’t, I would take my responsibility. No entrepreneur ever got a straight line to success, failure is life’s greatest success in learning!
  • The replacement was a great self reflection. First of all, I’m not a kickboxing trainer. I like the game, but I’m a runner and a performance trainer. Second and more important, it wasn’t about the person Cally, neither was it about the qualities of the trainer Cally. It was about a new stimulus! The same reason why athletes change their coach once in a while. And even if I did screw up, learn from it! Man, this happened so many times in the beginning of my career!

Trust me I know my stuff but making mistakes, feeling insecure and getting older don’t make you perfect, it makes you experienced! And that is something of value to share!

Starting this Monday, a new week, I got more ideas than ever, I’m sharp as a knife and you know why? Because in my work, in my life, I still have……….. ‘The Sparkle’

Cheers,

Cally

Ps. So far, this was one of the most difficult things I’ve written. I felt ashamed, judged, had an ego but in the end I was relieved. No matter what anyone thinks (well, ok that’s a lie haha).

So I dare you: Share one of your insecure moments in the comments!
There’s no right or wrong and definitely no judgment!
