Oldest and Youngest Teams in the NBA

The youngest player to ever play in the NBA was Andrew Bynum, who made his debut at 18 years and six days. That was back when players were allowed to go to the NBA straight out of high school. Now, players have to be at least 19 years old on December 31st of their draft year and one year removed of their graduation from high school. Nat Hickey is the oldest player, at age 45 years and 363 days old, to play in the NBA. Hickey was actually the coach of the Providence Steamrollers, but he activated himself as a player for one game.

The question is, which teams, currently playing in the NBA have the lowest and highest average age in their team?

Youngest Teams:

5. Philadelphia 76ers (24.7)

4. Portland Trailblazers (24.6)

3. Brooklyn Nets (24.5)

2. Phoenix Suns (24.3)

1. Los Angeles Lakers (24)

The Portland Trailblazers might seem like a surprising team for the 4th lowest average age in the entire NBA, and all their players are under 30 years old. Furthermore, only 7 out of their 16 players are over 25 years old. Both the Phoenix Suns and the Brooklyn Nets even have 12 players who are 25 years old or younger on their roster. The youngest team in the league, the Los Angeles Lakers have even more players of 25 and younger on their team: 13.

The Boston Celtics don’t have one of the five youngest teams, with an average age of 24.8, but they’re quite close. They are a good contender for such a young team, as they’re currently in the first position of the Eastern Conference.

Oldest Teams:

5. Cleveland Cavaliers (27.2).

4. Dallas Mavericks (27.4).

3. Houston Rockets (27.8)

2. Golden State Warriors (28.1)

1. San Antonio Spurs (28.1)

It is interesting to see that 4 out of 5 of the oldest teams belong to the top contenders in their conference. Cleveland, San Antonio, Golden State and Houston are all in the top three of their conference. Only Dallas isn’t doing so well, they’re currently in the last position of the Western Conference. The Cavaliers still belong to the five oldest teams in the NBA, even after they traded half their roster. Before the trade deadline, the Cavs were the oldest team in the league, now they are the five-oldest team in the league.
