AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE ALL WANT TO GET PAID, BUT THAT SHOULDN’T BE THE PURPOSE.

Kicking off with Denzel, we discussed his work, his form of art and his desire for success. His creativity is boundless. From A till Z, he sorted out everything. We also had the chance to listen to his brand new song, that has yet to be released. Furthermore, Denzel explained that “it is super important to share your ideas and tell people straight up how you feel”.

Hi, can you introduce yourself?

I am 24k.Water from Amsterdam, I make music and I'm a model on request.

When did you start to get interested in music?

My whole life actually, it’s because of my family. Especially from my brothers and father, but now I'm making 4 years of music for myself and I'm serious about the craft of the art for about 2 years.

Where did your passion to make music come from?

I felt like I had to prove myself to my mother and father, so that they could be proud of me. But after a while, when I was more involved with music, I found out that music was a great way to express my emotions and use my imagination. It is a way to escape the reality.

How did you get the name Water?

This is quite a funny story actually, we (Tommyboys) were once in Henny's house, very smoked out and we love to roast each other, it's a sign of showing love to each other. We were in a roast battle and Henny was losing. At one point, he came up with "you're ugly as water". Nobody understood that stupid statement. So we laughed our ass off, he didn’t want to admit his loss and he kept calling me water every day. And since then I thought; this name has potential, because I'm everywhere, just like the fact that water can go everywhere. Besides that, Water is something smooth and you could guess what I am. So yes, I live by my name.

“IT WAS STRANGE BECAUSE MY ARTIST NAME CAME TOGETHER SO QUICKLY, I ALMOST DIDN’T HAVE TIME TO NOT ACCEPT IT. IT’S FUNNY THOUGH”

Are you studying or what did you study?

I stopped with school last year. I studied physiology, but school wasn’t something for me.

How did you feel about your first publication in Indie Magazine?

At that moment, it did not feel so special, because I was busy with other promotional things.
It was something I could tick of my list and that I could do for fun. A few weeks later I looked back and realized that I was in Indie magazine and that I could achieve more.

How do you go about writing a new song? Can you give me a description of how such a day would look like?

Well, let me start at the beginning: Writing lyrics. I don’t do that. And if I write something, it's usually a hook (chorus) or just 1 word, haha. If you take a peek into my memos, you'll only see 1 word with only 2 bars or something. For the rest, I have 5 studios available where I can always record. One of those studios is located in Rotterdam, it’s at Levi’s place, better known as Kauwboy. He helped me a lot with the sound I have now. And I love it when I can use my emotions as an inspiration for a song. So when I'm in the studio, I'm usually behind the microphone.

Can you tell me which genre your music is?

I have to say that the music I make, I can’t categorize it, but it's a mix of everything I love. It’s a bit of pop, a bit of rock, a bit of R&B and also hiphop influences. But if I have to put it under a genre, it would be Trap / R&B.

The track "Wolf in Rockstar clothes" has been my favorite track so far, how about you? Do you also have a favorite track or song?

Yes, sure I have one, but it’s not listed on the PiNK EP. That track has to be done, as soon as possible. But let’s get back to PiNK, ‘Wolf in Rockstar clothes’ is the best track to listen to or the track ‘Focus’. Pff, I really don’t know. I’m so proud of every number that I can’t choose. But yeah, Wolf it is.

“AND YES, MUSIC IS A FORM OF ART”

From what moment are you sure that the idea you've made up in your mind, should be worked out as a track?

If I have a good chorus, at least, and if that chorus is good or even perfect to me.
If I got a good hook, the idea of the whole track could be worked out well. If not, I will throw it in the trash. No matter how good the verse is.

How do you prepare for a performance?

I practice all my songs twice in the same week I am going to perform. Furthermore, I smoke a joint before I go up. Besides that, it’s important for me to be with the brothers on stage.

“I DO IT FOR THE PEOPLE, THE EXPERIENCE AND THE ARTISTIC OBSESSION.”

Where would you like to perform?

Woo Hah. I think the crowd there would feel the art I want to express through my music.

What do you like to do besides being an artist?

Modeling and fashion. I always try to make crazy fits with the things I already have.

Your appearance is quite uncommon, in a positive way. Are you focused on your appearance?

Yes, of course. I am just being me, it’s my image and the way I look. I think it’s important.

What are your favorite fashion brands?

Gucci, Balenciaga, Faith, Tommy Hilfiger and a few who no one knows, but I need to keep that low-key, you know.

Recently, you were a model in a Nike campaign, could you tell me more about this?

I got there because of my manager, Elvis Osawe. He always comes up with these great projects and I had to say yes. Like, if I would reject this, it would be crazy right? It was a nice experience, and it opened many doors for me.

What should a person have, to work with you?

The person must be open minded. Not afraid to experiment, and the music must be booming or the artist needs to be a chill person. For the rest, I don’t really care how many fans you have, if you're really good, let's goooooo!

If you should name a person on the spot which it would to seem great to cooperate with, who would that be?

TRAVIS SCOTT. Definitely. This man showed me that you can do much more than rap, besides that I’m a big fan of his art.

Who was the very first artist you looked up to?

Prince.

“I SEE MUSIC AS MY SELF EXPRESSION.”

What are your strongest features and how do they help you as an artist?

Going hard and not giving up. I know exactly what I want and what I don’t want. I have my own sound.

What do you like the most about your own work?

If I listen to my own music, it’s the way I customize my sounds and manage the hooks. Shouts outs to me, man.

“IT’S BEEN A GOOD YEAR.”

Where do you see yourself within 5 years?

All over the world. I’ll be an icon in this game.

“MUSIC IS ENERGY AND SOUND. EVERYBODY CARRIES A DIFFERENT VIBE. I FEEL LIKE MY PURPOSE IS TO TELL PEOPLE A STORY AND LET THEM GET IN TOUCH WITH ME.”

How do you think about the flood of new artists today and how do you think you can stand out in the crowd?

I think it's dope that everyone wants to make music. It's not for everyone, I can tell you that and that’s something I always keep in mind. I distinguish myself, because I keep everything close to myself and I have a different purpose, relative to other artists. I'm not talking about the money or views, it's about the sound and the music.

Do you attach a lot of value to the internet regarding your own interests and choices?

Yes, everything I do is through the internet. This whole new wave was created by the internet, so yes. I definitely attach value to the internet, no doubt.

Just another question; if Spotify, Deazer and all the other stream mediums wouldn’t be here, how would you promote yourself as an artist.

Just spread the word. Mouth-to-mouth advertising, appeal to everyone. You would hate me, because I would promote myself so much, but you would definitely check it.

What would you advise all starters?

I am a starter by myself, but just be yourself and seek out assignments. Make yourself a brand! And never stop working, but keep improving your craft.
