Best Three-Point Shooting Big Men

These days, a lot of big men can shoot threes. For some, like Kristaps Porzingis, it seems to come naturally, while other had to really adapt their game to fit into the modern NBA. But who are the best three-point shooting big men in the NBA?

Dirk Nowitzki

He’s nearing the end of his career, but Nowitzki has definitely proven that he is a great shooter. The German big man has been an example for a lot of players. He is the only center who has ever won the three-point contest (2006), and besides that, he has shown over and over again that he has the skills to be effective from long range.

Kristaps Porzingis

Porzingis shot about 5 threes per game last season, and he hit almost 40% of those. That means that he keeps improving his long distance shot, something that still makes him stand out from the rest of the big men. He did make less threes in total this year (90) compared to the previous season (112), but that also has something to do with his ACL-injury. This year, as soon as he has recovered, he will have to try to improve his three-point percentage even more.

DeMarcus Cousins

Cousins has been a good three-point shooter for a while now, and it might be extra deadly now that he has joined the Warriors team. When the video of him during a three-point work-out was released online, people started realizing for real what him going to the Warriors might mean for the NBA. Not to forget that Cousins already shot about 6 threes per game, and hit 2 of those

Nikola Jokic

Jokic improved his three-point percentage by a lot the last season. He went from 32% to 39% in one season time, and at the same time he shot twice as many threes per game as he did before.  This shows a lot of promise for the next season, as Jokic has proven that he’s still able to improve himself. And, as he’s only 23, he probably can still get a lot better.

Pau Gasol

Gasol was one of the players who had to change up his game at the beginning of his career, because it became clear that big men had to start shooting threes. He has had some successful three-pointer years, and some less successful. In the 2016-2017 season, his three-point percentage was even above 53%, and he shot about 2 threes a game. This season, he shot about the same amount of threes per game, but he hit a little less of them. Even though his percentage might fluctuate a bit, he has proven to be a good shooter.

Karl-Anthony Towns

Towns has only played three seasons in the NBA, but he has already improved his three-pointers by quite a lot. In his first season, he hit about 34% of his threes, while shooting no more than 1 per game, while he hits 42% of a little under 4 shots per game three years later. And, as he’s still only 22 years old, that shows a lot of promises for the years to come, especially if he can do the same at the other aspects of his game as well.
